Overview
Psychology is the scientific study of mind and behaviour. Today it encompasses a vast range of areas from the study of the brain to leadership, from memory to conflict resolution. It employs experimental, correlational, observational, physiological methods as well as more traditional methods such as case studies. The science of psychology continually feeds applied areas in the field such as clinical and industrial psychology, as well as other areas of human endeavour such as education and economics. The Master’s program in Psychology at Yaşar University aims to provide the students with a wide-ranging base in advanced topics in the science of psychology with focus on up-to-date research. The degree program arms the students with a strong background in various research areas in the field with the primary goal of preparing them for doctoral study in a specific area. Those who are interested in furthering their knowledge in the field of psychology as well as obtaining a higher qualification in this exciting area of research to improve their career prospects will also benefit from the course.
The program consists of taught courses and an empirical research thesis, both of which will enable the student to specialise in a specific research area. The taught courses are largely left to the student’s choice (limited to the specific courses offered by the department in a given semester, and in line with the advisors’ recommendations). The course in statistics and research methods over two semesters is mandatory for all students with the aim of bringing them to a doctoral level of competence in advanced statistics and research methods in psychology. In addition, a seminar course in which students carry out individual work on research literature is also mandatory. Finally, the thesis further determines the student’s area of specialisation. Under the supervision of his/her advisor, the student designs, conducts and presents an empirical research project in the form of a thesis and defence before a jury. The usual time frame for the thesis phase is the second year of the program, after the taught courses have been successfully completed. The thesis area will be chosen from among the fields of expertise offered by the department members. No thesis supervision outside of the areas of interest and/or expertise of the members of the department can be offered. Scholarship opportunities may be offered depending on the strength of the application.
